Choosing A Caterer

Before choosing your reception site and/or caterer obtain a number of different estimates and menus. Lowest price is not always the best determining factor of value. It's a matter of who can do it best at a price you can afford. Make sure you ask for references and check them out.

Whether your reception site comes with a caterer or you need to hire a caterer separately, following are some questions you should ask:

  • What menu’s styles are available: appetizer, plate service, or buffet? (Ask to see copies of menus.)
  • How flexible is the menu, can special diets or requests be accommodated?
  • What is the cost for children? What age is considered a child?
  • What dishes are included in the menu price?
  • Are any glasses included? (Wine or Water glasses)
  • Who sets the tables?
  • Are table linens included? If yes what colour?
  • Is table skirting included? If yes what colour?
  • Are any decorations included? Buffet? Head table? Centre pieces?
  • If serving a buffet is head table service available?
  • What is the ratio of staff to guests? Usually for a sit down menu 1 to 20 is adequate.
  • How much of a deposit is required to hold a date?
  • How and when is the balance paid?
  • Are there any extra charges to be aware of?
  • What is the refund policy in case of cancellation?
